古都里庵のいろいろご案内ページをご覧頂く前に、まずは古都里庵について少しだけご紹介させて頂きたいと思います。

さて、日本のまほろばと言われる大和の地、奈良県高市郡明日香村の空家同然の古い民家との出会いが、古都里庵の始まりでした。
私が最初にこの古民家を見たときは、とても人が住めるような状態ではなく、このままでは朽ち果てるだけといったオンボロの様相でした。
しかし、すこし高台のその場所から見える明日香の山々の素晴らしさ、敷地内にある百年以上も経った桜の大木やいろんな木々の魅力等にかねてから老後には落ち着いた田舎の素朴な民家暮らしをと思い描いていたとおりの、素晴らしい田舎暮らしが可能だと感じたのです。
私は後先のことを何一つ考える間もなく早々にこの古民家の再生と荒れた敷地を素敵な庭に変身させることに取り掛かることにしました。
最初は只々子供のころの記憶にはまだ残っていた昭和初期の建物の風情を、この朽ちた古民家に再生されることだけを願ってネットで探し当てた古民家再生を専門の大工さんたちや庭師さんたちと、ああでもないこうでもないと試行錯誤の毎日でした。
私は、日本のあちらこちらから使われなくなった建具を集めてもらい、自身は奥さんと京都の数ある名庭園をいろいろ見て回り骨董市店を巡っては昭和初期の器具など見つけ、出来るだけ建物や内装・外周を昔のままの姿に再生させるように努めました。
作業を進めるうちに、大工さん達も庭師の方たちもそれぞれに仕事の範囲を超えてこの建物を再生させることに力を注いでくれました。
素人監督気取りで都度口出しする私に本当に採算度外視で、正直大丈夫かなと思ったことも度々でしたがお付き合い下さいました（笑）。 
そのようにして6ヶ月を楽しく費やした結果、見違えるような風情の建物の再生としっとりと落ち着いた素晴らしい庭園ができたのです。

A Message from the Host

Welcome to the website of Kotorian.
Isao Ogawa, and I am the host of Kotorian.
Before you explore the various information pages of Kotorian, I would like to share a little about the story behind this special place.
Kotorian began with my encounter with an old, almost abandoned traditional house in Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture—a land often described as Yamato, the spiritual heart of Japan.
However, the breathtaking view of the Asuka mountains from its gentle hillside, the presence of a magnificent cherry tree over one hundred years old, and the rich variety of trees on the property deeply moved me.
Without giving much thought to the future, I soon began the journey of restoring this old house and transforming the neglected land into a beautiful garden.
My only wish at the beginning was to revive the nostalgic charm of early Showa-era architecture that still lingered in my childhood memories.
I gathered unused traditional fittings from various parts of Japan, while my wife and I visited many renowned gardens in Kyoto and explored antique markets in search of Showa-era household items.
As the work progressed, the craftsmen and gardeners went far beyond their usual responsibilities, devoting themselves wholeheartedly to the project.
After six enjoyable months, the house was reborn into a place of refined charm, accompanied by a serene and beautifully balanced garden.
Sitting alone on the engawa veranda, listening to the gentle sound of water flowing into the pond while gazing at the garden, I often felt as though time itself had stopped.

It felt far too precious to keep all to myself.

Kotorian became a private, exclusive accommodation limited to one group per day.
